Chapter 3
A friend of mine was in the USA last year. When I met him on the street the other day, I asked him about his tour. Naturally I tried to get some ideas for the planning of my trip.
“You said that you spent a week on a cruise ship in the Caribbean while you were in America last year. How did you like it, George?”
“It was a fantastic experience, I will never forget it”. “We were on one of those brand new Norwegian ships. On board we had everything a person could wish for. They often sailed at night and we woke up in a new place, one more beautiful than the other.
One day we were taken ashore on an island without any houses. The ship’s crew brought along everything we needed for the day. We made a camp on the beach. We stretched out in the sun and got a nice suntan. A barbecue was set up, and we were served our lunch right there. Some of the passengers went swimming. Others preferred to sit in the shade of the palm trees.
In San Juan Puerto Rico we went sightseeing ashore. They picked us up with some big tour buses and took us on an interesting trip through the town.
The city has a monument to Colombus’ discovery in 1493. Spanish is still first language of the island today although it is a part of the USA. Our trip also had a walk through the old town. We all enjoyed the stop in San Juan. Before we returned to the ship, we had time to go shopping.
With all its restaurants and entertainment, a ship is like a floating hotel. One night we went to the ship’s theatre to see a show. The show started with some good singers and a band. They had dancers in fancy costumes along with it. In the end a conjurer entertained us with his tricks. We all enjoyed that too, but I found it nicer to go dancing myself. After all we had been eating and drinking for over a week, we surely needed the exercise.
