Task 1         

Look for the answers to these questions in the text.

a)

Why did the first settlers leave Europe to settle in America?

b)

There was no feeling of unity between them. Why?

c)

Why did England want to unite the colonies?

d)

Why did England want money from the colonies?

e)

What was the end of the quarrel about money?

 

Task 2        

a)

Find words and word combinations with the same meaning:

original - survive – first – community – founded – settlement

govern – aim – unite – trade – monopoly – rule - established  

society – goal – buy and sell – live on – first inhabitants         

have all rights – join forces.

 

b)

Write five sentences where you use as many as possible of  these words.

 
Task 3          
Check out the newspapers for stories about smuggling. Write it down and read it for your class.
 

Task 4            

Get the names of the thirteen first colonies from a book or Internet. Try this address:           http://www.yale.edu./lawweb/avalon/declare.htm

Find the names of the colonies on a map of the USA. Write down the names of the colonies on your own map.

 

Task 5           

Boston was very central in the conflict. Find out about some of the important things that happened there. Handy Internet address: http://www.pbs.org/ktca/liberty/ and choose “Chronicle of the Revolution”.

 

Task 6           

This Internet address gives you a list of other things that happened in the conflict: http.//www.pbs.org/ktca/liberty/chronicle/episode1.html

Write down at least five of them. Find more information about one of them and tell you group about what you found.
